The Zimbabwe Republic Police acknowledges the onset of the 2025 festive season, a period marked by an increase in travel and socio-economic activities, as well as large public gatherings across the country. On the other hand, the country faces challenges of road traffic accidents, criminal activity and various violations of the law. This necessitates enhanced vigilance, heightened and proactive policing by the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
In this regard, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has deployed police officers throughout the country to conduct roadblocks, traffic blitz, stop and search operations. Motorized, foot and cycle patrols will be intensified in all areas which include Central Business Districts, residential areas, industrial zones and leisure centres. If leaving your home ensure that it is securely locked and there is always someone to watch over it.
Road safety is a collective responsibility by all Zimbabweans therefore motorists are urged to comply with speed limits, avoid overloading and plan their journeys accordingly. Above all, drivers should minimize night travel as some fatal road traffic accidents occur during these times due to vision and observation challenges.
The Police will impound all defective or unroadworthy vehicles for the safety of Zimbabweans and visitors to the country. Members of the public are strongly discouraged from boarding non-public service vehicles, including pirate taxis and mushika-shika, for their own safety. Similarly, private motorists are urged not to offer lifts to strangers, as doing so exposes them to the risk of robbery cases, loss of their vehicles and valuables to criminals.
Police road safety campaigns will continue to emphasise awareness, compliance, and the strict enforcement of road rules and regulations.
With the onset of the rainy season, the Zimbabwe Republic Police calls upon motorists to exercise caution on slippery roads and avoid crossing flooded rivers or bridges. Public Service Vehicle operators are reminded to prioritize passenger safety at all times. I also encourage passengers to report reckless driving to the police as soon as possible for the safety of the public during this period.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police will also intensify operations to curb smuggling and other illicit activities along the country’s borders. Transporters and individuals involved in import and export activities must declare all goods at official ports of entry and exit, as the law will be applied without fear or favour.
My office has directed Officer Commanding Provinces to take stern action on illegal liquor outlets during this holiday. Liquor outlets operating outside stipulated hours and those selling alcohol to minors will be dealt with in accordance with the law. Parents and guardians are cautioned against facilitating underage drinking and alcohol abuse during the festive gatherings.
As families, businesses and institutions go about their daily activities, the public is urged to safeguard cash and valuables to minimize the risk of robbery and violent crime. The Zimbabwe Republic Police has intensified operations targeting drug and substance abuse in all communities and will take action against anyone involved in the distribution or supply of illicit substances to the youths and adults. I implore the people of Zimbabwe to report any person dealing in drugs or illicit substances to the police.
Zimbabweans in general are urged to observe peace at all times and exercise restraint during the festive season where some disputes end up resulting in murder cases and other violent crimes.
During the forthcoming New Year celebrations, Zimbabweans are urged to adhere to the country’s laws on the use of fireworks, firecrackers, and similar devices for public safety and maintenance of law and order in the country.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police does not condone any form of corruption, whether on the roads or during police operations. Refuse to pay a bribe. Remember by paying a bribe you are equally guilty of the same crime. Members of the public are encouraged to report any criminal, corrupt, or suspicious behaviour to the nearest police station or the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631, or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197.
On behalf of the Zimbabwe Republic Police, I extend my sincere wishes to all Zimbabweans and visitors for a safe, peaceful, and accident-free festive season.
