Police Provinces
With a total of 390 757,7 square kilometers in area and a population of 17 061 239 people in the country, the Zimbabwe Republic police has so far established 10 operational provinces, 74 district headquarters, 509 police stations and 92 police posts.
Chief Staff Officers & Chief Directors at Police General Headquarters
The ZRP General Headquarters is situated at corner 7th Street/Josiah Chinamano Avenue, in Harare. Departments at the Headquarters are headed by Chief Staff Officers and Directors.
Harare Province
Harare Province is bordered by Mashonaland East Province to the East and South, Mashonaland West Province to the West and Mashonaland Central Province to the North. The Headquarters is located on the Second Floor of the Old Building at Harare Central Police Station, corner Inez Terrace and Kenneth Kaunda Avenue. The furthest points in the Province includes: – Munhenga which is 27Km to the North, Duri which is 29,5Km to the South, Norah Halt 31,5Km to the East and Stapleford which is about 24Km to the West.
There are nine (09) Police districts which make up the province namely:- Harare Central, Harare Suburban, Harare South, Mbare, Chitungwiza, Harare Traffic, CID Property, Border Control and Law and Order. Of the nine [9] districts in the province, five [5] are operational that have a total of 30 stations. The province has an area of 2 304 square kilometres and a population of 2.7 million people [2012 National Census].
Bulawayo Province
Bulawayo Metropolitan Province consists of four operational districts namely, Bulawayo Central, Bulawayo West, Bulawayo Suburban and Nkulumane.The Province covers an area of about 2096 square kilometres. It has common boundaries with Matabeleland North and South Provinces. The area of policing comprises of communal/resettlement farming, mining areas, heavy and light industrial sites, residential areas and the Central Business District.
It policies the second largest city in the country, Bulawayo, with an estimated population of 717 863 people [2012 National Population Census]. The Province is also a gateway to Harare, Masvingo, Beitbridge, Plumtree and Victoria Falls. In addition to the usual resident population, there are thousands of people from within Zimbabwe and beyond our borders who come to Bulawayo as visitors, shoppers, tourists or in transit to other premier tourist destinations such as Matopos National Park and the Mighty Victoria Falls.
Bulawayo province has 16 operational DUB stations, 21 CID/CIU sections, three CPU sections, five Posts and 10 Bases.
Masvingo Province
Masvingo Province is situated to the South-East of Zimbabwe. It shares internal boundaries with Manicaland Province to the East, Matabeleland South to the South, Midlands to the West, Mashonaland East to the North and externally it shares international boundaries with the Republic of South Africa to the South and Mozambique to the South-East. The Provincial headquarters is located at corner Robertson Street and Josiah Tongogara Street, Masvingo, about 300 km from Police General Headquarters.
The Province policies an area of 56 566 km2 with a population of about 1 486 604 basing on the 2012 census. The Province is divided into 4 operational Districts namely Masvingo Central, East, West and Chiredzi. There is one CID District which covers the whole province. There are 21 duty uniform stations, 6 CID stations, 3 National Traffic stations and 1 Border Control and Minerals Unit station.Most of the stations are situated in a rural environment.
Midlands Province
Midlands Province is located in the central part of Zimbabwe. It borders with Matabeleland South to the south, Matabeleland North to the west, Mashonaland West to the north, Mashonaland East to the east and Masvingo Province to the south-east. The Province is one of the largest provinces in the country covering an area of 49 166km2 with a population of 1 622 476 based on 2012 population census.
The Province is divided into five operational Duty Uniform Branch Districts, namely, Gweru Urban, Kwekwe, Zvishavane, Gokwe and Gweru Rural. It has 26 Duty Uniform Branch police stations, 12 police posts and 29 police bases. Within the Province are three CID District Headquarters, namely, Gweru, Kwekwe/Gokwe and Zvishavane with a total of 10 CID stations and 03 CID posts. The Province also has three Minerals and Border Control Unit stations and four traffic stations. The Province’s policing area consists of urban, rural, resettlements, small and large scale farming as well as mining areas.
The province is endowed with vast mineral deposits among which are gold, platinum, diamonds, chrome, asbestos, coal, iron-ore and emeralds.
Mashonaland East Province
Zimbabwe Republic Police Mashonaland East Provincial Headquarters is located in Marondera town and the furthest point is Nyamapanda Border Post, which is 236 kilometres from Mashonaland East Provincial Headquarters and policed by Nyamapanda Police Station. The Province has one international boundary with Mozambique to the North East. It shares common boundaries with six Provinces namely Manicaland to the East, Masvingo to the South, Midlands to the South West, Mashonaland West to the South West, Harare to the West and Mashonaland Central to the North West.
It covers an area of about 52 655, 27 square kilometres and has population of 1 337 059 basing on 2012 census. The Province has a total of three Police districts namely Marondera, Chivhu and Murewa: 20 operational stations, four Police Posts and 36 Bases. There are three CID stations, three CID Posts and one Base. Police National Traffic is located at Marondera Central, Chivhu and Murewa Stations. The traffic stations are ably supported by one Post and seven Bases.
Mashonaland Central Province
Mashonaland Central Province lies on the northern part of Zimbabwe sharing common boundaries with Zambia to the north-west and Mozambique to the north-east. The mighty Zambezi River marks the boundary between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Internally, the Province borders with Harare Province to the South, Mashonaland East Province to the East and Mashonaland West Province to the West.
It covers a policing area of 28 347 square kilometres and is demarcated into three [3] police districts namely Bindura, Guruve and Mt Darwin. There are 19 Duty Uniform Branch stations, four posts, 55 bases, four CID stations, one CID Law and Order station, One Minerals and Border Control Unit Station, five National Traffic Stations and one Professional Updating Centre. The furthest station from the Provincial Headquarters is Kanyemba, which is 345 kilometres away. Basing on the 2012 National Population Census, the Province has a population of 1 139 940.
Farming and mining are the major economic activities in the Province.
Mashonaland West Province
Zimbabwe Republic Police Mashonaland West Provincial Headquarters is located in Chinhoyi. The area of policing is 57 441 square kilometres. The Province shares a common boundary with Harare Province to the East, Mashonaland East Province to the South-East, Midlands Province to the South, Matebeleland North Province to the West and Mashonaland Central Province to the North-East. It also shares a common international border with Zambia to the North.
The Province has six [6] DUB operational Districts namely; Makonde, Kadoma, Manyame, Hurungwe, Kariba and Chegutu. There are thirty-five DUB stations, eleven CID Stations, seven Traffic stations and two Minerals and Border Control Unit stations.Matabeleland North Province
Matabeleland North Province
Matabeleland North Province covers an area of 64 246, 78 square kilometres and shares common boundaries with Mashonaland West Province to the North East, Midlands Province to the East, Bulawayo Province to the South East and Matabeleland South Province to the South. The Province also shares international boundaries with Botswana to the West, Namibia to the North West and Zambia to the North. The Province’s policing area comprises urban, semi-urban, resettlements, communal lands, commercial farming,National Parks, Lake Kariba and the Mighty Zambezi River which serves as a national boundary to the North with Zambia.
Population is estimated at approximately 749 017 people based on the 2012 census. There are 19 Police Stations, 3 CID Stations, 3 CIU stations, 1 Minerals and Border Control Unit, 1 CID Law and Order, 5 Post and 15 Bases in the Province.
Victoria Falls and Hwange National Parks serve as the major tourist attraction centres in the Province.
Matabeleland South Province
Matabeleland South Province is situated in the southern part of the country. Its geographical area is 54 172 square kilometres comprising resettlement, communal and commercial farms. Its headquarters is located in Gwanda town. Matabeleland South Province shares international boundaries with South Africa to the south and Botswana to the west. Internally, the province shares boundaries with Masvingo province to the South East, Midlands province to the East, Bulawayo and Matabeleland North provinces to the North.
The province is composed of three police operational districts namely Gwanda, Beitbridge and Bulilimamangwe. There are 21 police stations, three CID stations, three MBCU stations and three traffic stations, eight police posts, 47 bases and four formal border posts namely Beitbridge, Plumtree, Mphoengs and Maitengwe.It has a population of about 656 319 basing on the 2012 census.
Manicaland Province
Manicaland Province is situated in the mountainous eastern region of Zimbabwe. The Province shares a common international boundary with Mozambique to the East which stretches for about 720 kilometres, from Mahenye in the South to Rwenya in the North. The Province shares Provincial boundaries with Mashonaland East to the West and Masvingo to the South.
The Province covers an area of about 36 459 square kilometres with a population of +/- 1 755 000 [2012 National Census]. The furthest point is Mahenye Base which is 318 km away from the Provincial Headquarters. It is under Chisumbanje Police Station which is about 246 km away from the Provincial headquarters. The Province has five {5} Districts, thirty {30} DUB stations, four {4} Traffic Stations, four CID stations {4}, six {6} Police Posts, sixty-two {62} Police Bases and twenty-eight {28} Provincial Sections.
Support Unit Province
Support Unit is an operational province which plays a pivotal role of supporting other police provinces in fighting crime. The province undertakes various activities including border patrols, counter insurgents and anti-smuggling deployments as well as public order management. In addition, the province also carries out anti-poaching, VIP protection and guarding of key installations amongst other duties.
The Provincial Headquarters is situated at Chikurubi, about 16 kilometres east of the capital city, Harare. The province has a total of five [05] operational and one [01] administrative districts and deployments are done throughout the country.
Depot Province
Depot Province is the National Initial Police Recruit Training Institute comprising of two recruit training districts namely Morris and Ntabazinduna Depots. Morris Depot is located in Harare whilst Ntabazinduna Depot is located 35km away from Bulawayo along Harare-Bulawayo road. The Province has also six support section districts namely;
