ZRP PRESS STATEMENT  : 13TH JANUARY 2024 –  FATAL ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT AT THE 35 KILOMETRE PEG ALONG MUTARE-MARANGE ROAD

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 12th January 2024 at around 1330 hours at the 35 kilometre peg along Mutare- Marange Road in which six people were killed whilst 12 others were injured.

A Mazda BT50 vehicle with 17 passengers on board, which was travelling towards 22 Miles, was hit from behind by a haulage truck while giving way to a stationery truck at Marange Turn-off. The driver of the haulage truck fled from scene.

Six victims were identified by their next of kin as listed:-

  • Anna Tariro Machangachanga, a female adult (30) of Sakubva , Mutare.
  • Joyce Duchi, a female adult of Mushunje Primary School, Mutare.
  • Portia Nyamajo,a female adult (43) of Chikanga 2, Mutare.
  • Nomatter Hwenzira,a female adult (35)  of Mushunje Primary School, Mutare.
  • Tsitsi Masuzhe, a female adult (47) of Dangamvura, Mutare.
  • Addella Henzira,a female juvenile (1)  of Mushunje Primary School, Mutare.

The bodies of the victims were taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital mortuary for post mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.

Meanwhile, two people were killed while seven others were injured when a Toyota Ragius motor vehicle with eight passengers on board veered off the road, overturned several times and landed on its right at the 28 kilometre peg along Harare- Chirundu Road on 11th January 2024 at around 0200 hours.

The two victims were identified by their next of kin as listed:-

  • Melody Chikwanda, a female adult (30) of Budiriro 1, Harare.
  • Clayton Wasarakunze, a male adult (40) of Budiriro 2 Harare.

The bodies of the victims were taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary for post mortem while the injured are admitted at the same hospital.

The Police implores drivers to observe all road rules and regulations and to ensure that their vehicles are fit to travel on the country’s roads. Above all, the motoring public is urged to stop at all road traffic accidents and allow the due process of the law to take it’s course and also to render assistance to the casualties.

Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing for information which may assist to arrest the truck driver who abandoned his haulage truck and fled from the scene after the Marange accident.
